HEARTBEATS (2023 & ‘24 O’Neill NMTC Semi-Finalist) tells the story of Eve — a driven, idealistic, and accidentally pregnant Indiana 17-year-old, just as she's about to follow her dreams at college. After a thwarted illegal abortion attempt, Eve ends up in the New Life Unit: a pilot prison program created by the federal government since the passage of the Unborn Protection Act, which codified abortion as murder. Over the next 9 months, Eve, alongside her fellow inmates, must reckon with parenthood, purpose, and mortality. With (dark) comedy and heart, HEARTBEATS explores how America's harsh dictums on sex and gender affect all of us.
